Giants Questioned on Russell Wilson’s Chances of Staying QB1

The New York Giants have one of the most interesting quarterback situations in the league going into the 2025 season. They have a star quarterback in Russell Wilson, who has appeared in two Super Bowls in his career, Super Bowl XLVIII and Super Bowl XLIX, and took home a win for Seattle Seahawks with Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014.

Wilson has apparently been wanting to get with the Giants for a while. He’s a guy who seems to love the spotlight and thrives in the Big Apple. He was even spotted at New York Knicks playoff games, showing his support for other New York teams, and he and his wife Ciara even stuck around and signed autographs at one of those events.

But, some are already looking past Wilson to the team’s long-term quarterback situation.

The New York Giants’ Backup Quarterback Situation

In a June 13 piece for Bleacher Report, Brent Sobleski lays out a handful of NFL teams who are going to need to really rely on their backup quarterbacks in 2025, or at least he believes they will.

When it comes to quarterbacks entering the season, “Not all 32 teams will have a starting-quality option in place and a few will almost certainly experience upheaval at the game’s most important position throughout the season,” he states in the piece.

So, why did the Giants makes this tally? He believes this will be a make or break year for Jaxson Dart, because the Giants are going to test him to see if he can be their quarterback of the future.

In the feature, Sobleski states, “The New York Giants were determined not to be pigeonholed into selecting a quarterback with this year’s third overall draft pick. They didn’t.” He adds that, “However, the approach didn’t stop them from drafting a signal-caller who will eventually determine the team’s path.”

That’s, of course, where Dart comes in. The Giants have Wilson, Jameis Winston and Dart, but considered that they traded back into the first round to select Dart, they must think he’s the guy for the future of the franchise.

Jaxson Dart and the New York Giants

“Wilson enters the situation with the expectation of being the starter, but this season is all about Dart and what he shows,” Sobleski adds. “General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll might have bought themselves a little extra time with a first-round QB. Although they must show marked improvement after significant downturns in performance during the past two seasons.”

So, Sobleski believes that Dart will have to quickly show what he’s capable of to get that go-ahead to be the team’s quarterback for years to come, and he thinks he’ll get that chance this season.

“Unless the Giants are scoring points and winning games at a surprising rate early in the season, it feels inevitable that they reach a point where it’s time to see what Dart can do,” ESPN’s Dan Graziano stated during the offseason.

Wilson is still quarterback number one, but even he knows that this is a temporary arrangement. The true test will be for Dart.
