The Giants have turned their quarterback room upside down, with the Daniel Jones Era long gone. And now? Chris Simms is leading a media charge that includes wild guesses and premature trade rumors.
With all due respect to Chris Simms - son of the New York Giants legend Phil Simms, former NFL QB in his own right and now an NBC commentator - how in the world does he think he knows what he pretends to know?
The Giants have turned their quarterback room upside down, with the Daniel Jones Era long gone. And now?
The only remaining member of the Giants' QB group from a year ago is local folk hero, Tommy DeVito, and he's been nudged down the depth chart with the arrival of vets Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston and after the team drafted Jaxson Dart.
There is reason for the team to be high on Dart as he enters his rookie season after they drafted him at No. 25 overall in the first round earlier this month in Green Bay; once you trade back into the first round to gobble up an additional pick, and pay to do so?
That's a vote of confidence for the kid.
Indeed, Chris Simms has already made a bold prediction regarding Dart.
"If Jaxson Dart is phenomenal through training camp and in OTAs and has a really good preseason, and Russell Wilson's just OK and doesn't look all that sharp? I don't think they'll be scared to start Jaxson Dart," Simms said.
That's a lot of "if's.''
But Simms even goes on to pick a specific week when the transition will occur.
"I wouldn't be shocked,'' he said, about Dart starting in "Week 1. I think realistically, if you made me bet, I'd say somewhere around Week 5 or 6 is where I'd expect it."
Week 1? Week 5? Week 6? What are we doing here?
But there is now a cottage industry of ideas and rumors spring-boarding from Simms' wild guess ... er, we mean, expertise.
Sporting News is among those who are conjuring up trades.
"Trading Jameis Winston wouldn't result in a massive haul of picks, but it would be a win even if the Giants could land a Day3 selection for the former first-overall pick,'' SN writes.
Guys, we're getting way ahead of ourselves here. The Giants cannot be sure what they have in Dart, have no idea how the season might unfold, can only guess as to what Winston's value might be here or elsewhere ... and nobody has even tried on their shoulder pads yet.
Let's let the cake bake.
