The New York Giants saddled themselves to QB Daniel Jones when they extended him on a $160 million contract in May 2023. However, after a disastrous multi-season run since Jones led the franchise to the playoffs a couple years ago, New York is poised to move on this coming offseason.
That process is likely to include at least an attempt to select a QB in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft. However, the Scouting Department at Bleacher Report predicted earlier this week that it may center around the signing of impending free agent Sam Darnold, currently of the Minnesota Vikings.
"At this rate, New York will likely move on from Daniel Jones in the offseason and look for a new quarterback," B/R wrote on October 28. "The idea of bringing in a relatively young free agent might be an intriguing option. Darnold will be just 28 years old in June and has been playing his best ball so far this season. Plus, it helps that he has experience dealing with the New York media circus and won't be a wide-eyed 21-year-old this time."
Darnold inked a one-year, $10 million deal with the Vikings over the offseason and led the team to a 5-0 start, during which he was among the top candidates for the league's MVP Award.
The MVP heat has since cooled off, as Minnesota has dropped a couple consecutive contests. However, Darnold remains among the most pleasant surprises in the league this season with 1,610 passing yards, 14 TDs and 5 INTs on a completion rate of 67.2%.
Darnold is definitely going to get paid somewhere, though probably not by the Vikings who have rookie QB in No. 10 overall pick J.J. McCarthy waiting in the wings with a knee injury he suffered during the preseason.
