Giants Predicted to Make Shocking Reach for SEC QB in Draft Amid Aaron Rodgers Rumors - Athlon Sports

New York Giants GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll have everything to lose this offseason when it comes to the quarterback(s) they add, as several reports from around the NFL in recent weeks and months indicate that both of their jobs are now at stake.

But that kind of pressure could afford them the boldness to take a couple of monster swings in both free agency and the draft. New York is already the betting favorite to sign 41-year-old QB Aaron Rodgers, which Mina Kimes of ESPN described on Tuesday, March 4, as a solution born of "desperation" on both sides of the equation.

Charles Davis of NFL Network predicted on Wednesday that the Giants will make an equally high-risk, high-reward play with the No. 3 overall pick in the upcoming draft by selecting Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart.

"The last time the Giants went all in on a QB from Ole Miss, it worked out pretty well. I know people have not been projecting Dart to go this high, but New York has a screaming need at the position," Davis wrote. "After passing on Michael Penix Jr., J.J. McCarthy and Bo Nix in last year's draft, the G-Men might not feel like they can sit back and wait this time around."

Part of the context for this prediction is the Tennessee Titans selecting QB Shedeur Sanders first overall and the Cleveland Browns picking Cam Ward second, which isn't a common projection among prominent mock drafters across the NFL landscape.

Nevertheless, it is possible the Giants will miss out on both Ward and Sanders, which could lead them to reach for a player like Dart who has typically been labelled with between a second- and fourth-round draft grade, depending on the evaluator.

New York may decide to select a QB at No. 3, be it Dart or Sanders or Ward or some other signal-caller, and still sign Rodgers to a one-year contract -- particularly if whichever QB the Giants land on in the draft is considered a project who may not be ready to start in Week 1.
