Giants named ‘logical’ trade destination for Pro Bowl tight end

Sure, they added Russell Wilson, Jaxson Dart, some swing tackles and a few 2025 draft picks, but the starting offense will, for the most part, look the same next season. This is why general manager Joe Schoen should consider adding one more weapon via trade.

Earlier this week, CBS Sports named the Giants one of the three “logical trade destinations” for Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith. Smith, 29, is entering the final year of his contract and has been square on the trade block amid heated extension talks.

Writes Tyler Sullivan of CBS Sports:

“New York is desperate for a boost on offense after registering the third-lowest yards per play average (4.7) and second-lowest points per game (16.1) in the NFL last season,” Sullivan wrote via CBS Sports. This offseason, the Giants revamped the quarterback room, bringing in the likes of Russell Wilson (the likely Week 1 starter) and Jameis Winston, along with drafting Jaxson Dart in the first round earlier this spring.

“No matter if it’s Wilson or eventually Dart under center, it’d behoove the Giants to give either quarterback a capable tight end as the security blanket. Currently, 2024 fourth-round pick Theo Johnson is atop the depth chart, and while he had his moments during his rookie season, he’s hardly a guarantee to anchor the position group. If he is able to keep up his production from last season, it wouldn’t be that shocking to see Smith come in and compete for the second-most targets on the team behind ascending star receiver Malik Nabers.”
