Giants miss out on chance to sign veteran player at a position of need

It will be intriguing to see how the secondary for the New York Giants performs in 2024. Last season, inconsistency ran rampant around the unit.

Giants miss out on chance to sign veteran player at a position of need

The Giants have needed help at cornerback for over a year now. They had a chance to sign a veteran CB that is coming off one of his best seasons, but now, that opportunity is out the window.

Veteran CB Steven Nelson is retiring

Why does Nelson's decision affect the Giants?

The G-Men, along with a handful of other NFL teams, had some interest in bringing in the defensive back. Check out a list of the teams who had interest in Nelson below.

  • New York Giants
  • Houston Texans
  • Las Vegas Raiders
  • Los Angeles Rams
  • Washington Commanders
  • Miami Dolphins

Cornerback remains one of the biggest holes on the roster for New York.

They're projected to start rookie Dru Phillips in the slot, according to OurLads. Deonte Banks had a great rookie year, but the depth behind him outside is suspect at best for a second season in a row.

Nelson intercepted a career-high five passes last season. The Giants could have used that sort of production in their secondary.

“Retirement, after thinking it over and having some talks with my family, I think it’s time for me to take a step back and spend more time with my family. We’re expecting a newborn this coming month and I wanted to devote all of my time and energy to that and various business ventures off the field. I’m extremely proud of what I was able to do in the game of football."

"Coming from a small town without a lot of resources, having to go to junior college, making it out of there to go to Oregon State, which was across the country from my family, going through a lot of trials and tribulations to get to where I am today and to be able to persevere and make it this far. I’m extremely proud of my legacy and my career.” -- Nelson via Aaron Wilson

Nelson is 31 years old.
