Giants Legend Details 1 Abdul Carter Trait That Reminds Him of Lawrence Taylor

It’s no secret that New York Giants first-round pass rusher Abdul Carter has been absolutely dominant at training camp so far, but sometimes it takes an NFL player who has done it before to truly put things in perspective.

Heavy on Giants and Between the Hashmarks reporter Matt Lombardo visited training camp last week, and he spoke with NYG legend Carl Banks about Carter, among other topics.

“He’s a unique talent,” Banks told Lombardo, regarding Carter. “There’s super-talented people in this sport, as in every sport, and then there are those that you can look at and see the way they move and know that there’s something different about them. Abdul has that. He has that.”

Later in the conversation, Banks noted that one Carter trait even reminds him of Pro Football Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor, although he was sure to reiterate that he’s not comparing the rookie to his former teammate — who is widely considered to be the greatest Giants player in the franchise’s century-old history.

“I would never compare Abdul Carter to Lawrence Taylor,” Banks stressed while speaking with Lombardo. “But, what I can tell you is he’s different in a way that Lawrence was different.”

Continuing: “Again, I’m going to say it again, I’m not comparing the two, there is no comparison, other than when you see different, you know it. There are things that Abdul does that if he walked off the sideline and you asked him ‘what move was that?’ he would probably tell you ‘I don’t know, I have to watch the film.’”

“We were often in awe [at] Lawrence [Taylor] when he practiced,” Banks explained, “and we’d see things, and it’s like ‘wow, what was that?’… And you go look at it on film, and all of a sudden coaches are trying to teach it to everyone else. They just instinctively move different.”

Banks sees that same practice trait in Carter. But perhaps putting it all together on the field as an impact playmaker will earn the rookie more of an actual comparison someday.

Abdul Carter Is Impressing Giants Teammates, Too

Lombardo also relayed a quote from second-year safety Tyler Nubin on Carter, who told him: “He’s a freak. He’s ultra confident in himself, and what he can do, and what he brings to the table. I think that makes him even more dangerous, because he’s already a dangerous player, but he comes out and acts like it.”

Similarly, SNY’s Ben Krimmel compiled teammates’ early opinions of Carter on August 2, including that of left guard Jon Runyan Jr., one of the players tasked with stopping him.

“He’s got fantastic bend, unreal quicks and speed,” Runyan said at Giants training camp. “Being out there, especially when he comes inside, that’s not like his natural home, but when he gets in there, I think he’ll be able to cause a lot of havoc in there on the inside when he goes against guards.”

The veteran interior offensive lineman sees Carter’s speed as a potential huge problem for opposing guards.

Linebacker and team leader Bobby Okereke also praised Carter’s willingness to listen and learn, as well as his demeanor and mentality.

“He’s going to make a play at whatever position you line him up at,” Okereke predicted. “He’s just a dog football player, and I’m excited that he’s on my team.”
