Giants could cut ties with $61 million starter via trade with Patriots

The New York Giants drafted Abdul Carter with the second overall pick in the NFL Draft. However, it could mean they are open to trading one of their other starters to the New England Patriots.

Between Abdul Carter and Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux may not be an essential part of the Giants' plans. The Giants have picked up his fifth-year option already, and he is projected to earn a three-year, $61 million deal when he hits free agency. The Patriots could use a player like Thibodeaux, according to Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox.

"The Patriots, who recorded just 28 sacks in 2024, should have interest in adding Thibodeaux if he's available," wrote Knox. "New England did add Harold Landry III and Milton Williams in free agency but could still use another sack artist on its defensive front."

In three seasons, he has 21 total sacks. His numbers are underwhelming for a top-five draft pick, but he has shown flashes. He had 11.5 sacks in 2023, and last year he had 5.5 sacks in 12 games. A fresh start could do him some good, especially with more competition for reps in New York.

The Patriots made some key additions to their defense in the offseason. Milton Williams was the headline signing for their defense, but adding a player like Thobodeaux could be great for the Patriots, who need answers for their pass rush.
