Malik Nabers gave everyone a heart attack on Tuesday. He went down awkwardly on a run play, grabbed at his shoulder, and walked off with the trainers. There was no cart, and no limp, but no return either. The team shut him down for the rest of practice, and fans were left to guess just how serious it was while refreshing social media like lunatics.
Well, now we’ve officially got the answer. According to Brian Daboll, Nabers is “good” and will be practicing Thursday. That’s not just good news, that’s code red avoided.
It’s not a reach to say this could’ve been catastrophic. This is the one guy they absolutely cannot afford to lose. You don’t build an entire offense around someone just to have it fall apart in July because on a run play, he wasn't even involved in. But that’s football. And Nabers is so back.
Giants avoid worst-case scenario with their most important player
No exaggeration, if Nabers had actually gone down with something serious, this offense would’ve imploded on the spot. He’s the reason any of this has a chance to work. That’s not disrespect to Darius Slayton or Tyrone Tracy Jr., Nabers just matters that much.
The 22-year-old single-handedly dragged an unwatchable offense to relevancy last year with two hands, one foot, and three quarterbacks. He’s back in full health (at least upper-body-wise), but still dealing with the soft tissue toe injury that's been following him for years. But he's already proved he can be elite while playing through that.
So when he crumples to the turf, grabbing his shoulder in late July, yes, it's overreaction season... it’s a full panic. And it should be.
There’s still no official word on what exactly the shoulder issue was (likely just a stinger), but whatever it was, it clearly didn’t warrant concern past Tuesday. Nabers is back, and the Giants can exhale... at least for now.
So we’re back to where we were: Malik Nabers is practicing. The Giants’ offense is back in the New York groove. And everyone can collectively exhale.
