Fans are excited to see rookie running back Cam Skattebo get to work in his New York Giants threads this season.
Outside of Ashton Jeanty, Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo has seen a major bump in fan anticipation for his NFL debut.
Skattebo was drafted by the New York Giants in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He became a fan favorite last season with the Sun Devils for his hard-nosed, bulldozer run style with his built 5-11, 216-pound frame.
For his rookie season, Skattebo chose to wear No. 44 ... a number that doesn't necessarily scream "running back" but certainly matches the throwback physicality Skattebo plays the game with.
Skattebo joined No. 3 overall pick Adbul Carter and first-round quarterback Jaxson Dart to represent the Giants at the NFLPA Rookie Premier to try on their new threads for the first time and get pictures taken by Panini for their NFL rookie trading cards.
At the event, the running back spoke with podcaster Kay Adams about how he came to the decision to choose his jersey number.
Skattebo wore No. 4 at Arizona State, but the number is retired by the Giants in honor of running back Tuffy Leemans who played in New York from 1936-1943.
Intuitively, Cam found a solution with a family history connection.
"Obviously I wanted 4, but it's retired," Skattebo said. "My brother wore No. 44 in high school and growing up and stuff, and I've worn it a couple times in the past ...
"Kind of a family number, you know, generational thing for me and my family. I wear one 4 for me and one 4 for him."
This jersey wasn't the first in the this rookie class that needed some thought behind it. Carter initially wanted No. 56, of course worn by the iconic Giants legend Lawrence Taylor.
Carter went as far as reaching out to LT, but was respectfully denied and encouraged to choose a new number to "make it your own." The Penn State star edge rusher landed with No. 51.
Skattebo and this exciting rookie class will hit the field in their new jersey numbers in the coming days for OTAs as they gear up for their first season in the pros.
The Giants drew a star-studded matchup with their division-rival Washington Commanders in Week 1 on Sept. 7.
