Giants’ boldest draft move is already drawing wrong kind of attention

You're missing something if you're not excited about what general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll are building for the New York Giants' future after this past NFL Draft.

Big Blue's front office impressed on draft night by taking Abdul Carter with the third overall pick. Then, they traded up with the Houston Texans to the 25th pick to take Jaxson Dart without sacrificing a future first-round draft pick.

The Giants upgraded their defensive line, giving them arguably the best front seven in the NFL, including Dexter Lawrence II, Brian Burns, and Kayvon Thibodeaux. They also added to a much-improved quarterback room that now includes veteran signal-callers Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston.

There are many reasons to be excited about what Carter and Dart can accomplish during their tenures in New York, but there are also some critics.

You can imagine that being the quarterback for the Giants is not easy. The New York media will challenge you, and the fans will not hesitate to let you know when you're struggling, but Dart seems more prepared than anyone to take on this job in the future.

That hasn't stopped some national media from still sleeping on the former Ole Miss quarterback and critiquing the Giants' decision to trade up and draft him.

Bleacher Report believes the Giants should regret taking Jaxson Dart

Matt Holder of Bleacher Report recently listed the six biggest regrets teams should have after the 2025 NFL Draft. Holder named the Giants, trading up to pick Dart at the bottom of the first round, as one of the regrets in his article because he's not deemed NFL-ready, and the attention at quarterback will be on veterans Wilson and Winston.

Holder states that giving up second and third-round picks to move up nine spots and pick a player who won't play this season was an overpay, but the truth is that the Giants didn't sacrifice a first-round pick. He adds that by the time Dart is ready to take over as the team's starting quarterback, Schoen, and Daboll may not be with the team anymore, as they will enter this season on the hot seat.

Yes, there's a chance that Schoen and Daboll may not be with the Giants when the torch is passed on to Dart as the team's franchise quarterback, but it's not like he won't have support within the organization.

You can expect former Giants quarterback and fellow Ole Miss alumnus Eli Manning to work with him. He has shown interest in becoming a minority owner of the franchise in the future, and fans can expect the next regime to continue contributing to Dart's development.

If Schoen and Daboll aren't with the Giants in the foreseeable future, let's just say the next regime will not be as in love with Dart as this regime. The G-Men can always draft another quarterback, as they still have their future first-round picks.

Still, there's no time to think about Schoen and Daboll's future right now. If anything, they should be patted on the back for taking a swing at pick No. 25 to go and get their guy.

As for Dart, his future is now in the hands of this organization, and the team must prioritize developing him so that when he is ready to take that leap as the long-term starter, they don't make the same mistakes they made with Daniel Jones.
