2022 feels like a long time ago, right?
When doing a review of everything Jimbo Fisher did, there was a WHOLE lot of wrong. Among the disappointing finishes, the let-downs in the portal and recruiting, there were some positives from his tenure. Among those positives, Kenyon Green is one of those that comes to mind. 2x AP All-American, including a first-team nod, Second Team All-SEC, and then a First Team All-SEC in 2021, his final season as an Aggie. The home-state Houston Texans took notice - Kenyon Green went higher than most had him projected, at No. 15 overall, but it hasn’t been a smooth ride throughout his pro career so far.
While the Texans have enjoyed tremendous team success, he has struggled as a whole so far in his career. As a rookie, he was rated last by PFF grade among guards, and was tied for second in penalties in the entire NFL. He did still manage to start 14 games out of the 15 he played in and challenged fellow former first-round pick Tytus Howard for his job in that offseason. This season, he entered as the starting left guard, but was eventually supplanted by Laken Tomlinson and Nick Broeker as the season went on. He managed nine starts before he eventually suffered an injury that took him out for the remainder of the season.
Ultimately, the uncertainty in his place on the Texans 2025 offensive line lead to a trade. The 2024 Super Bowl champion Eagles ultimately chose to pursue him. C.J. Gardner-Johnson, one of the best safeties in the league, was traded to the Houston Texans in exchange for Green and a 5th round pick. Under the tutelage of likely future HOF offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland, Green could be set for a huge explosion in 2025.
With Mekhi Becton seen as unlikely to return to the Eagles after an All-Pro level year, it’s expected that Green is going to be a primary challenger for the job.
