The Seattle Seahawks‘ quarterback situation has once again changed. Out went Geno Smith, who was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders for a third round pick, and in came former Vikings QB, Sam Darnold.
Although there are some who believe that Darnold could lose his starting job, backup Drew Lock is not a substantial threat – unless something goes really wrong with the former Jet. And rookie, Jalen Milroe – whilst talented – is still both young and raw, with much to learn.
The same, however, cannot be said for one of Darnold’s predecessors. Or indeed, his predecessor’s predecessor, Russell Wilson.
Wilson was signed on to become the starting QB for the Giants, before New York promptly selected Ole Miss QB, Jaxson Dart, with the 25th overall pick in April’s draft.
Russell Wilson One Of The Favorites To Get Benched In 2025
Given that both Dart and former #1 overall pick, Jameis Winston, lie behind him in the depth chart, Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay believes that Wilson is one of the more likely quarterbacks to lose his job as the starter over the course of the season, coming in at 3rd.
“The New York Giants are desperate to bounce back after one of the worst seasons in franchise history.” Kay wrote on Wednesday. “This desperation led to them inking Russell Wilson to fill the void under center but could also lead to the veteran being discarded at the drop of a hat.
Although fan-favorite Tommy DeVito is still on the roster and Jameis Winston in place as a veteran insurance option, first-round rookie Jaxson Dart is the clear future of this franchise and it won’t be long before fans are clamoring to see more of him.
Wilson can’t afford a slow start due to Dart’s presence. He’ll also have to shake the stink of last season—one that ended with him losing each of his last five starts including a blowout defeat in the Wild Card Round—and get back to playing the type of high-level football he displayed regularly during his decade-long tenure with the Seahawks.”
Jaxson Dart’s Development Could Spell The End For Wilson’s Time At The Helm
Indeed, much of the reason that Kay posits the former All-Pro could be benched comes down to the presence of Dart, who he thinks could take over before the end of the season.
“Dart’s rapid development could see him emerge as the starter fairly quickly. According to Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post, the Ole Miss product just had his best day of training camp and dazzled onlookers. After that sizzling practice session, the young quarterback said “the game’s starting to slow down” for him, a concerning development for Wilson.
If the No. 25 overall pick continues to impress throughout the preseason, it’s likely Wilson will only be keeping his job for a couple months at best. Barring a red-hot start for the Giants under the veteran quarterback, this should be Dart’s team by the midpoint of the campaign.”
Dart was not a super, super polished quarterback coming into the league – hence why he went 25th instead of 5th. But with any first round QB, there is always a strong likelihood that they will take over the starting job at some point over the course of the season.
Even if Dart’s play just nearly matches that of the Wilson, Wilson will have to be significantly better – or be regularly winning, in order to keep his job for the duration of the season.
