For a couple of weeks now, we have been wondering exactly what is going to happen in this Matthew Stafford saga.
The New York Giants are in need of a quarterback, and by all accounts, they're going to get one this offseason. Whether it be with the no. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, via free agency or a trade, the Giants are going to get their quarterback.
Head coach Brian Daboll has no other option, and neither does general manager Joe Schoen. They have to make something happen. But, is Stafford really an option?
Although the Rams have recently allowed Stafford's agent to speak with other teams, both sides still want to get a deal done to allow them to stay together. However, the Giants are reportedly interested in trading for Stafford. So, there's that.
For fans wanting this to happen, there are a couple of reasons why it is highly unlikely. First of all, the asking price for Stafford seems to be far too steep for New York to end up paying. A first-round pick might seem like fair value, but certainly not this year. The Giants aren't parting with the third overall pick for a 37-year old quarterback.
But, there's another less obvious reason.
The Giants' chances of pulling off a Matthew Stafford trade are slim to none
In a recent TV segment, former NFL quarterback and now analyst, Chase Daniel, laid out a pretty strong reason why Stafford wouldn't approve a trade to the Giants. And, it has nothing to do with coaching, front office or the roster itself.
"In his entire career, he's never ever played for an outdoor team ... I think he needs to go to another indoor team," Daniel said.
This is also coming from a player who was teammates for a bit with Stafford, back in Detroit. Daniel obviously saw Stafford play well enough to keep the Rams in it until the end against the Philadelphia Eagles in this year's Divisional Round.

But, to play outdoors on a regular basis? That's not a likely preference for Stafford.
And, while the Browns, Giants, Raiders and Steelers are all interested, Daniel believes one other team should be in the running.
"I think it's going to come down to a two-team race ... I think it's the Vikings and I think it's the Rams," he predicted.
To be frank, Stafford is likely to stay put with the Rams. But, Daniel throwing the Vikings out there is definitely something. imagining Stafford with Justin Jefferson and under Kevin O'Connell is intriguing, to say the least.
