Former Mike Zimmer punching bag earns a starting job in the UFL

The NFL didn't work out great for Kellen Mond. Although he was selected with a third-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the former Texas A&M quarterback struggled mightily to stick with a team and find a way to contribute.

Mond's time in Minnesota was made a bit of a joke when former head coach Mike Zimmer roasted the young quarterback to the press. He was caught in a crossfire between Zimmer and former general manager Rick Spielman and ended up in the doghouse for it.

After his time with the Vikings, the Browns, Colts, and Saints all kicked the tires on Kellen Mond, but he still failed to see time in a regular-season game after leaving Minnesota. But now, he may be getting a chance to show what he can do.

Former Minnesota Vikings quarterback earns a starting job in the UFL

He may not be in the NFL, but Kellen Mond is getting an opportunity to play for the San Antonio Brahmas of the United Football League in 2025. In fact, the former Minnesota Vikings quarterback has been named the team's starter.

At 25 years old, Mond has only thrown three passes in the NFL's regular season. He saw action in 2021 in a Week 17 game against the Green Bay Packers where he completed two of his three attempts for five yards.

Now, Mond will shoulder the offense for the San Antonio Brahmas in the UFL. He beat out former NFL quarterback Kevin Hogan and Washington State's Jarrett Guarantano for the starting job during the 2025 season.

The six-foot-three, 211-pound Kellen Mond looks the part of a quarterback and should be excited to get another opportunity to play at a high level. Multiple players have used opportunities outside the NFL to re-launch their careers and this could be just what he needs to rejuvenate his career.

Games in the UFL start on March 28 with a showdown between the St. Louis Battlehawks and Houston Roughnecks. Meanwhile, Kellen Mond and the San Antonio Brahmas will hit the road on March 29 to play the Arlington Renegades on FOX.

Teams play one game each week for 10 weeks to complete the regular season. Playoffs then lead to the championship game on Saturday, June 14. Last season, the Brahmas came up short in the championship, but may be able to return to their big game with Kellen Mond at the helm.
