Justin Fields never quite became the player the Chicago Bears wanted him to be when former general manager, Ryan Poles, moved up to draft him with the 11th overall pick back in 2021, giving up a 2022 first rounder in the process.
But now the New York Jets will be hoping he fulfills the role he never quite managed in Chicago; becoming the team’s next franchise quarterback.
So Jets fans feared the worst when it was revealed that Fields was carted off the practice field during Thursday’s practice.

However, after further inspection, it was not a torn Achilles – something that many Jets supporters thought would come back to haunt them after Aaron Rodgers tore his on the fourth offensive snap of the season back in September 2023.
Instead, per The Athletic’s Zach Rosenblatt, the former Bear just suffered a dislocated toe.

What Happened To Justin Fields During The Jets Practice?
According to Kevin Patra of NFL.com, Fields got hurt on a non-contact play and will not miss a significant amount of time.
“Fields is considered day to day,” Patra wrote on Thursday, “avoiding a serious injury that would require him missing significant time, per the team.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport first reported that the quarterback dislocated a toe in his foot. Rapoport added that Fields did not suffer a fracture and that his big toe was not the one dislocated.
Fields was carted from practice early after pulling up lame following a play in which he rolled right and threw an incomplete pass to tight end Jeremy Ruckert, per reporters on the scene. The QB was down briefly before being helped off the field by a trainer. Fields spent time in the injury tent before being carted to the locker room.”
What Is The Outlook For Justin Fields In 2025 Post-Injury?
This injury certainly won’t help Fields’ preparation to justify his $20 million/year deal, which runs through the 2026 season. But at this point – certainly for the fans – they will be grateful that they will, in all likelihood, have their QB to start Week 1.
Fields did decently in Pittsburgh before being replaced by Russell Wilson, and whilst the Steelers reportedly wanted to keep him, they were not able to match the offer made by Woody Johnson and the Jets.
And in his final seasons in the Windy City, he certainly was not dreadful, managing over 3,100 total yards and 20 total touchdowns on offense. Perhaps if the Bears had not ended up with the Panthers’ first overall pick in 2024, Fields would still be on the roster.
But the Jets are not paying $20 million for what they have already seen on tape; they are hoping that under the new regime, and behind what could be an excellent offensive line – Fields can become a legitimately dangerous, dual-threat QB.
