Seattle’s star cornerback had his way with the Bears offense all game.
It wasn’t quite like his breakout game against the New York Giants last season, but second-year cornerback Devon Witherspoon was phenomenal against the Chicago Bears.
Witherspoon recorded three tackles for loss, tying a career high, and recorded his first sack of the season by ushering Caleb Williams out of bounds for no gain. No one is going to remember the sack, but anyone who watched the rest of his highlights knows that Witherspoon dominated Chicago throughout the game.
Of Witherspoon’s six tackles, five were for a maximum of two yards. Former NFL offensive lineman Brian Baldinger broke down Witherspoon’s highlight reel from Thursday night’s win.
“Yeah, I mean, this guy is the leader on our — it’s his second year and he’s grown so much as a leader and someone we’re going to depend on for a long time here,” Mike Macdonald said in the post-game press conference. “We love him, and it’s because of the energy and the competitiveness and the person and his love of the game and love for his teammates. It’s infectious. How can you not play 1000% when 21 is on the field doing the stuff that he does? We talk about force multiplier. He’s a force multiplier. Happy he got a sack. Wasn’t pretty, but he got one, and really happy for him.”
Witherspoon has seven passes defensed, six tackles for loss, no interceptions, and one sack. While he doesn’t have the counting stats necessarily to reflect his otherwise very good season, but there’s no denying his talent and effective aggression on the field. He’s a very fun chess piece to have and Mike Macdonald knows it just as much as Pete Carroll did, which is why the Seahawks made the rare move of taking a cornerback in the first round.
