Fan favourite Oilers forward may be taken out of lineup come playoffs for an upgrade

The Edmonton Oilers are coming off a productive NHL trade deadline, acquiring forward Trent Frederic and defenceman Jake Walman. While fans are applauding GM Stan Bowman's 'off-radar pickups, many uncertainties are beginning to surface regarding the Oiler roster for the playoffs.

Let's face it, Vasily Podkolzin was a feel-good story at the start of the year, but the magic gradually wore off due to his inconsistency on the offensive side.

Widely regarded as a dependable workhorse, his game does have its advantages, but there may not be spot on the roster come April.

Kane and Frederic threaten Podkolzin's spot on the team

'I don't think Podkolzin's spot in the lineup night one of the playoffs is locked up once Frederic and Kane are healthy.'

While fans were excited when the Oilers acquired Trent Frederic from the Boston Bruins, his arrival came with a slight hiccup.

Unfortunately, he's been sidelined with a lower body injury (ankle), delaying his debut with the team.

In addition, the Edmonton Oilers are expecting forward Evander Kane to return from injury for the playoffs, and between the two, there may not be enough space for Vasily Podkolzin.

Right now, the Oilers are in need of offence, and Podkolzin hasn't contributed enough to warrant a spot.

Moreover, Frederic and Kane bring the level of grit and tenacity required for playoff success.

While Podkolzin isnt lacking in physicality, Freddy and Kane are simply more complete players.

Hopefully, Frederic can recover before the playoffs, giving Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch the opportunity to make a more informed decision on the roster moving forward.

In 64 regular season games, Podkolzin has notched 21 points and posts a +7 rating on the ice.
