The Atlanta Falcons Agreed to terms with a speedy return specialist on Thursday.
When free agency began, the Atlanta Falcons lost their return specialist Avery Williams to the Philadelphia Eagles. On Thursday, they would try to lessen the impact of that move by signing the former Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Pittsburgh Steelers weapon Jamal Agnew.
According to NFL insider Mike Garafolo, Agnew agreed to a one-year contract for $2.5 million. The 29-year-old came into the NFL with the Detroit Lions in the fifth round of the 2017 draft. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Agnew started his career as a defensive back and return specialist who doubled as a receiver.
As a rookie in 2017, Agnew would return 29 punts, two of which went for a touchdown, earning him First Team All-Pro Specialist honors. He would also lead the NFL in punt return average at 15.4 yards per return.
During Agnew's run with the Jaguars, he began to establish himself as an offense weapon along with his return game. Agnew had 61 receptions for 641 yards and five touchdowns while adding 23 rushes for 195 yards and one touchdown running the ball.
Having been injured and spending some time on the Steelers practice squad over the last couple of years, Agnew is now healthy and has something to prove beyond being a specialist on special teams.
The Falcons may look for him to replace recently departed Rondale Moore, who would never see a meaningful with Atlanta after suffering a leg injury during training camp. Moore is now a member of the Minnesota Vikings.
