Falcons Raheem Morris identifies flaw that QB Michael Penix Jr. is trying to improve

The Atlanta Falcons are searching for a winning season as they continue to endure a lengthy drought without finishing above the .500 mark. Atlanta hasn’t made the playoffs in quite some time, but there’s hope that this year could mark a turning point. Second-year head coach Raheem Morris is looking for major improvements in the upcoming season.

Leading the charge will be second-year quarterback Michael Penix Jr. The former Washington Husky impressed in limited action as a starter last season. Now, he’s expected to take the reins for a full year. There’s a significant amount of hype surrounding Penix—enough that the Falcons have been given five primetime games this season.

“It’s a bit surprising that the Falcons have five prime-time games this season,” Jordan Dajani wrote. “I believe that's because of the excitement surrounding Michael Penix Jr.”

Still, not everyone is sold on Penix just yet, and some question the team’s decision-making—especially after trading away next year’s first-round draft pick.

“I really wish they had held on to that first round pick. Really, we’re giving away the first round pick right now? I don’t know if he will be consistent enough to be good,” Charles McDonald said.

Penix is currently being mentored by former Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, which bodes well for his development. While Coach Morris admits Penix isn’t fully in control of the offense yet, he’s making steady progress during OTAs.

“Raheem Morris says Michael Penix Jr. has been 'searching for the knowledge' to take ownership of Atlanta's offense in his first offseason as a starter. Says he's asking questions and trying to learn from as many people as possible,” Will McFadden wrote.

Penix is still early in his NFL journey, but his throws already display impressive touch and precision. If he can pair that with full command of the offense, he has the tools to build a successful NFL career.
