Falcons' $20 million versatile weapon sidelined for second consecutive practice

The Atlanta Falcons' defense is looking to wreak havoc this season after a relatively soft performance last year. New defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich has already transformed the mindset in the defensive room. There were a few scuffles during Sunday’s practice to close out the weekend’s training camp. However, on Saturday, the defense impressed by forcing turnovers with an aggressive playing style.

“What stood out most was how aggressive the defense seemed to be. They forced 3 punch outs today as that seems to be an emphasis from DC Jeff Ulbrich,” Falcoholic’s Adnan Ikic wrote.

The main concern coming out of Flowery Branch is the health status of Jalon Walker, Atlanta’s first pick in April’s draft. Walker missed practice on Sunday, though Ulbrich downplayed the issue.

“There’s just working on some stuff with his body but he’s going to be alright,” Ulbrich told the media.

Walker is expected to be a versatile asset for the Falcons, with the ability to contribute in multiple roles on defense. Ulbrich already has a clear vision for how he wants to utilize him.

“On first and second down, I want, especially Jalon, to really have an opportunity to just master playing on the edge because I think that there’s something there that’s really special,” Ulbrich said. “Give him an opportunity just to have one home initially and become as good as he can at that. Then, from a third-down perspective, we can get creative with him, and that’ll be part of his superpower.”

However, concern is beginning to grow as Walker missed his second consecutive practice on Tuesday.

“It’s not looking like we’ll see Jalon Walker out there today. Would be his second straight missed practice,” Ikic posted.

This could be a precautionary move by the Falcons, prioritizing long-term health over short-term availability. While there’s no official timetable for Walker’s return, he has been seen doing individual work on the sideline.
