Ex-USC Star Caleb Williams Receives Stunning News on Draft Night

The Chicago Bears entered night one of the 2025 NFL Draft ready to hand Caleb Williams a new teammate. The USC legend received stunning news in round one instead.

Chicago entered needing offensive help. Many believed Tyler Warren of Penn State would bolster the tight end room. Other predictions pointed to offensive line help coming for Williams -- a la Josh Simmons of Ohio State.

The Bears pulled a stunner, though. The franchise and general manager Ryan Poles opted for Colston Loveland of Michigan instead -- grabbing him at No. 10 overall.

Poles even attempted to get aggressive before draft night began. The Athletic NFL insider Dianna Russini reported Chicago tried trading up in the draft. Thoughts of Ashton Jeanty heading to the Windy City rose.

Loveland, though, heads over to this offense. Draft experts predicted the Michigan star would become available after selection No. 20. He lands much higher. However, new head coach Ben Johnson likely orchestrated this move.

Loveland received some Sam LaPorta comparisons by NFL Network draft expert Lance Zierlein pre-draft. The same TE who became a Pro Bowl performer when Johnson ran the Detroit Lions offense.

The Wolverines star now bolsters the aerial attack here. He'll join 1,000-yard wideouts Keenan Allen and DJ Moore in the Windy City. Loveland also walks into a TE room that features savvy veteran Cole Kmet. Now Johnson can opt for two tight end sets moving forward.

But Williams lands a stunning selection to open this offense up even more entering the 2025 season.
