Russell Wilson will always be beloved more by the Seattle Seahawks fan base than any other (he helped win a Super Bowl, after all). Oddly, he wanted to make changes to Seattle after the 2021 season, but the team made a change by trading Wilson to the Denver Broncos. He spent two seasons there and is now despised because he underperformed.
It's more than that, right? Wilson did not just sign a massive extension with Denver, but also wanted perks like having his own office. Acts like that made it seem like he thought he was bigger than the team. He lacked the self-awareness to be humbled.
That changed after Sean Payton became the Broncos' head coach and eventually demoted Wilson. After the 2023 season, Denver wanted to rid itself of the quarterback, no matter how much it cost. He joined the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024, leading them to five straight losses to end the season.
Former Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson might already be having issues with the New York Giants
Needless to say, Wilson, one of the foundational pieces of Seahawks football between 2012 and 2021, was not welcomed back with Pittsburgh, and he needed to find a new home in 2025 free agency. That was the New York Giants, his fourth team in five years.
The quarterback has yet to play a down with the Giants but has already stumbled into trouble. This issue is not of his own doing, though. The problem lies with wide receiver Malik Nabors, New York's best offensive weapon, who found immediate success as a rookie last season.
During an interview on the 7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony podcast, Nabors sent a warning to Wilson (and all the Giants quarterbacks) on behalf of all New York's wide receivers.
The receiver said, "I ain’t gonna, but I’m gonna speak on all receivers — (expletive) it, I’m speaking on all receivers. We all feel the same way. We don’t like not getting the ball... I’m getting open and I’m not getting that (ball). We’ve got a problem. We’ve got a problem. . . . I ain’t playing about that ball."
Wilson is expected to be named the Giants' starter, at least in Week 1. He is part of a crowded quarterback room that features Jameis Winston, Tommy DeVito, and rookie Jaxson Dart. Winston and Wilson both have a lot of starting experience, and DeVito has been consistently inconsistent as a part-time starter for New York. Dart is probably Wilson's main competition.
Dart was chosen by the Giants in the first round (25th overall) of the 2025 NFL draft, and he won't be going anywhere. Maybe New York keeps three quarterbacks and one of those is Wilson, but if New York's season goes south quickly, and Nabers is complaining about the quarterback play, Wilson being QB1 could be short-lived.
Of course, had Wilson not gone to Seahawks owner Jody Allen and voiced his interest in having general manager John Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll fired, he might still be playing for Seattle. He might wish he had never said a negative word after his career had a severe downturn since he left the Seahawks.
