The Miami Dolphins may be thin at corner – and likely even thinner if Jalen Ramsey, as expected, ends up traded. But that does not mean they did not have veteran options to bring in this offseason.
Indeed, they actually discarded one of their starting cornerbacks last season, Kendall Fuller, who played the third most snaps at corner for the Dolphins in 2024, behind just Jalen Ramsey and slot back, Kader Kohou.
Despite the seeming unending shortage of quality corners in the NFL, Fuller has not been signed by an NFL team. Yet Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox believes that he is still one of the top CB prospects remaining on the open market.
“Kendall Fuller has never been an elite cover corner or a Pro Bowl player.” Knox wrote on Thursday, “However, he has been a dependable starter with a good amount of postseason experience.
Fuller, who won a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019, has 104 regular-season starts and five postseason starts across nine NFL seasons. He made 11 starts for the Miami Dolphins in 2024 but missed time with concussions.”
And whilst he did not set the world alight last season, Knox believes that he could be a smart addition for one of the NFC’s ascending teams, the Arizona Cardinals.
“Pro Football Focus graded Fuller 75th overall among all cornerbacks for the 2024 season. Miami released him in the offseason in a cap-saving move.
Given his recent concussion history and the fact that he turned 30 in February, Fuller shouldn’t command a lucrative, long-term deal…Fuller, who also has experience playing safety and nickel back, would also fit with the Arizona Cardinals. Arizona could use secondary depth after ranking 21st in net yards per pass attempt allowed last season, and Fuller’s positional versatility would mesh with Jonathan Gannon’s defense.”
Whilst the Cardinals did draft cornerback Will Johnson in the second round of this year’s draft, they also lost starter and veteran, Sean Murphy-Bunting, to a season-ending knee injury last month.
With Johnson, second year pro, Max Melton, and nickel back, Garrett Williams, the Cardinals have a young but talented cornerback trio.
However, that trio has little reliable depth behind it, Starling Thomas V did an OK job last season, in which he started 15 games, garnering a 60.9 PFF grade – good for 116th best at his position in 2024.
Fuller would provide slightly better cover for the starters than Thomas. But perhaps more importantly, he would provide bona fide leadership in a room whose most experienced player, Williams, is just now going into his third year in the league.
Fuller has more years of experience going into his tenth year in the league, than the the three starters and their three primary backups listed on their initial depth chart – who have just seven years in the league combined.
A Super Bowl champion and full-time starter in six of his nine seasons in the NFL that have earned him a cumulative $71 million, Fuller has been there and done that in the league over the course of the past decade. On a cost-efficient deal, he could make a great deal of sense for Arizona as they look to push into the playoffs in 2025.
