Ex-Cowboys scout offers frustrating reason why Dallas hired Brian Schottenheimer

It didn't take long for Jerry Jones to become one of the more polarizing figures in NFL history. After all, after he bought America's Team in 1989, Jones' first move was to fire the original face of the Dallas Cowboys, Tom Landry. Fast forward to 2025 when Jones hired Brian Schottenheimer as his next head coach.

The Joneses were torn to pieces, likely because they had a whole pool of talented coaches to search for from the outside, and they never really did that. Schottenheimer was hired because of his familiarity with the Cowboys system.

On the "Doin Alright with Broaddus and Voch" podcast, former Cowboys WR Jesse Holley made an appearance and asked if the Cowboys just settled to hire Schottenheimer.

"(The Cowboys) absolutely did," Bryan Broaddus responded. "Brian Schottenheimer has been in the building and seen all the f-ups that Mike McCarthy had...He's the one guy that kind of knows what to tell Jerry and Stephen."

This hiring at first was a disappointment. Even though Schottenheimer is winning the offseason, any first-year head coach is going to have their growing pains.

Voch Lombardi made a great point, adding that Schottenheimer might just have to lean on guys like offensive coordinator Klayton Adams and defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus. McCarthy has long hired assistants that he knew personally. Schottenheimer, though, hired guys that are proven veterans.

From an off-the-field standpoint, Schottenheimer seemingly has all the intangibles. Between his poise with the media and ability to cultivate player relationships, it's hard not to root for him. And after Micah Parsons' late night prank call to his head coach, we can safely say that the stars of the team feel open to him.

Deep down, we all know why the Joneses hired Schottenheimer. He wasn't expensive and knows what it's like to work with them. Did he crush the interview? No doubt, but that doesn't make the Joneses' process any less questionable.

Hopefully Schottenheimer is able to silence his skeptics.
