ESPN ties Commanders to backfield shakeup featuring dynamic free agent

Not much news has been made lately on the NFL free agency front, but there is no deadline for teams to make late additions to their rosters for 2025.

Some massive names are remaining on the market. These include four-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers and Pro Bowl wide receivers Amari Cooper and Keenan Allen. The Washington Commanders aren't — and shouldn't be — hunting for name value over roster fit. But there are a few veteran candidates, such as 2014 No. 1 pick Jadeveon Clowney, who could work well in D.C.

Matt Bowen from ESPN discussed some of the league's top players available and their best potential fits. He had the Commanders making a signing that could raise some eyebrows.

Commanders linked with bold move for J.K. Dobbins before the 2025 season

It's hard to believe that running back J.K. Dobbins is still a free agent after he enjoyed a career year in 2024, playing on a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers. The oft-injured former Ohio State standout set career-high marks in rushing yards and touchdowns while playing in 13 games, more than he suited up for in his previous three seasons combined.

Despite finishing runner-up in NFL Comeback Player of the Year voting, it seems that Dobbins' injury concerns loom large. At a position not known for longevity, the 26-year-old has been deemed damaged goods for the time being. Most teams are content with their backfield lineups as they stand entering the 2025 season.

Should Washington kick the tires on Dobbins? It couldn't be completely dismissed.

The Commanders are currently set to run back their tandem of Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler, while seventh-round rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt has the opportunity to emerge as one of the 2025 draft's biggest steals. There's not a whole lot of room for the former 2020 second-rounder, especially at the salary he would likely command.

That said, should Robinson or Ekeler run into injury issues as they both did for stretches last season, Washington could be wise to keep an eye on Dobbins, provided he remains unsigned. He's shown he can still be a productive player in the NFL when available, and the Commanders have no time to waste.

Given the high degree of injuries in today's NFL, particularly at the running back position, it seems unlikely that he will be out of a job all season long. If Washington finds itself in a position where Dobbins' services are needed, the ex-Baltimore Ravens force could be headed back inside the Beltway.
