Upon the conclusion of the 2025 NFL Draft, many Chicago Bears fans felt that Nick Chubb would have been added to the team's offense by now.
The Bears' pursuit of Chubb or J.K. Dobbins has been the biggest takeaway from the draft since the team wasn't able to add a running back until the seventh round.
However, if Ryan Poles is to be believed, the Bears are content with the running backs they currently have on their roster. In part, that is tied to the Bears' front office not being thrilled with how Matt Eberflus' coaching staff handled Roschon Johnson. A defined role for Johnson, along with an initial gathering of data on Kyle Monangai may be the determining factor on if the Bears add a running back or not.
Along those lines, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN unloaded his post-draft notebook. In doing so, despite noting the Bears' attempt to move up in the second round of the draft and select TreVeyon Henderson, Fowler mentions that the Bears may wait until closer to training camp before they make the decision on adding a veteran running back. The reason is that the Bears first want to get a sense of the value that Monangai might bring to the offense.
Don't expect the Bears to add a running back anytime soon
The theme this offseason has been trusting Ben Johnson. If Johnson is comfortable with the running backs the Bears currently have on their roster, then fans shouldn't feel like a weakness is being ignored. Having said, history proves that Johnson, in the past, did not think D'Andre Swift was a fit for his offense.
The key will be the development of Monangai and then the role that Ben Johnson has identified for Roschon Johnson. When Roschon Johnson was drafted in the fourth round of the 2023 draft, the sense was he was the team's running back for the long term. That could still wind up being the case with his new role. If the development isn't seen by the time training camp is starting, that could be when the Bears decide it is time to add a veteran running back.
