Eagles Predicted to Release Former First-Round Pick After Offseason Trade

The Philadelphia Eagles didn’t exactly act like they won Super Bowl LIX this offseason, as their front office was busy swinging several big moves in the wake of their historic victory. The Philadelphia Eagles didn’t exactly act like they won Super Bowl LIX this offseason, as their front office was busy swinging several big moves in the wake of their historic victory. One such move saw them pick up offensive lineman Kenyon Green in a trade with the Houston Texans in an effort to bolster their depth at this spot.

Green didn’t pan out with the Texans, so the Eagles decided to take a flier on him to see if he could find his footing with them. After he suffered an injury in the team’s preseason opener against the Cincinnati Bengals, though, Philadelphia has been predicted to release Green just months after trading for him.

Eagles Predicted to Cut Kenyon Green

The Texans selected Green with the No. 15 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft with hopes that he could become a key piece of their offensive line for years to come. While Green enjoyed a decent rookie campaign, he ended up missing the entire 2023 season due to a shoulder injury before struggling upon his return to action in 2024.

Houston cut their losses with Green by sending him to Philadelphia as part of a trade that landed them C.J. Gardner-Johnson. The Eagles feature arguably the best offensive line in the league, so they have the freedom to develop Green behind the scenes to see if he can realize his potential. However, he got carted off the field with a wrist injury during Philly’s preseason clash against Cincinnati.

Suddenly, the Eagles find themselves in a bit of a tough spot with Green. The severity of his injury is certainly worth keeping tabs on, but Philadelphia may be forced to move on from him based on the overall depth of their roster. In Anthony Miller’s latest 53-man roster prediction for “Inside the Iggles,” he doesn’t have Green making the final cut, which is a surprising development when considering the team only traded for him a couple of months ago.

“Kenyon Green’s injury in the game is disappointing and part of the reason why the Eagles might need to move on from the former first-round pick,” Miller wrote when explaining his decision.

In the grand scheme of things, the Eagles don’t truly need Green on their roster. They already have their starting offensive line in place, and as mentioned above, it’s arguably the best in the league. You can never have enough depth at this spot, though, and with Landon Dickerson still recovering from offseason knee surgery, that has thrust Green into a bigger role to start training camp.

With other guys healthy and playing better, though, it may become tough for Philadelphia to justify handing Green a roster spot based on his potential alone. His injury status in the wake of this preseason contest is worth monitoring, but the more time he’s forced to miss, the longer his odds of making the initial 53-man roster become.
