The Philadelphia Eagles added to their cornerback competition via a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday night. Philly sent Thomas Booker IV to Vegas and received cornerback Jakorian Bennett in return.
This move has many questioning the Eagles' belief in their current cornerback room post Darius Slay.
Of course, head coach Nick Sirianni won't come out and admit that they aren't sold on Kelee Ringo or Adoree Jackson replacing Slay, but this trade says it all.
“Just adding depth to that position,” Sirianni said of the trade on Tuesday. “I think both those guys have done an outstanding job. I know Vic talked about that (Monday). That’s a battle. You love having battles. I think you can look out there and see Adoree make a play, you see Kelee make a play. They’re doing a really nice job, and excited about how they’ve worked, how they worked all offseason, how they worked all summer, and came in here ready to compete. Competition brings out the best in all our guys. We’re looking forward to continuing those battles with those guys.”
Bennett, originally a fourth-round draft pick out of Maryland in 2023, joins the Eagles following an injury-plagued career, though he showed plenty of potential when healthy. Playing in 10 games for the Raiders in 2024, Bennett logged 26 tackles and deflected eight passes before he underwent season-ending surgery on a torn labrum. He has since fully recovered and should spice things up between Ringo and Jackson's camp battle for the starting CB2 job.
Bennett, who will wear No. 49, did not participate in the Eagles' last practice before Thursday night's preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals, so it looks like we'll have to wait and see how things shake out next week.
“We’ll get him going and we’ll see how that goes,” Sirianni said. “Obviously, there’s a lot of meeting times that we have to make up. We’re getting him early in camp, though, so we’ll catch him up in some off time, catch him up during the meetings, and have some other things to get him ready to go.”
Until then, all eyes will be on Ringo and Jackson.
