Super Bowl contenders often become a great landing spot option for veteran players who want to prioritize their chances of winning a championship towards the end of their pro careers.
This makes the Philadelphia Eagles a potential top option for one seven-time Pro Bowler who has been recently tied to trade rumors entering the 2025 NFL season.
Philadelphia Eagles Named One of ‘Best Fits’ for CB Jalen Ramsey
Jacob Camenker of USA Today recently dove into some of the potential best fits for veteran Miami Dolphins CB Jalen Ramsey entering the 2025 NFL season, who has been tied to some recent trade rumors over the last few months.
Camenker wrote, “The Eagles would be a dark horse option to trade for Ramsey, but never count Howie Roseman out from pulling off an aggressive move. Philadelphia lost Darius Slay and Isaiah Rodgers during the offseason and could use a veteran to pair with the strong second-year duo of Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean.”
This move would provide defensive coordinator Vic Fangio with ideal flexibility at cornerback alongside Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean.
Ramsey is fully capable of flexing inside as a nickel defender, but moving DeJean out of that spot could prove to be a mistake with how well he played in that complex position as a rookie.
Camenker added, “Ramsey could slot in across from Mitchell with DeJean playing the slot and create one of the best nickel packages in the NFL. Vic Fangio will love having Ramsey available, so perhaps the Eagles will be willing to use their $24.8 million in cap space to make way for the veteran cornerback – provided they still have ample space after signing their 2025 draft picks.”
DeJean was recently named the best slot cornerback in the league by Bill Barnwell of ESPN who wrote, “DeJean spent the first month of his rookie season on the sideline, but after Philadelphia’s Week 5 bye, his move into the starting lineup coincided with a massive defensive improvement. After ranking 26th in expected points added (EPA) per play on defense before the bye, the Eagles were comfortably the league’s best defense by the same metric afterward — the second-place Texans ranked closer to 13th than they did to first.”
A Trade Would Reunite Jalen Ramsey and Vic Fangio in Philadelphia
Ramsey has been one of the elite cornerbacks in the league since he entered the league back in 2016, but failed to make the Pro Bowl for the first time in the last eight years in 2024 with just 60 total tackles and two interceptions last season with the Dolphins.
Even if Ramsey isn’t considered a top five CB anymore, he is familiar with Fangio’s scheme during their time together in Miami.
When playing in Fangio’s defensive scheme in 2023, Ramsey produced 22 total tackles, five passes defensed, and three interceptions in just 10 games played that season.
In theory, Ramsey could have a very seamless transition joining this defense ahead of the 2025 NFL season while giving this talented defense an accomplished veteran presence to replace Darius Slay.
Philadelphia also has a plethora of draft assets they simply won’t be able to roster next year, which could allow them to put together an attractive trade package to send to Miami.
Ultimately, this deal does make some sense for both sides. It certainly isn’t a guarantee to come to fruition, but Ramsey joining the Eagles isn’t all that farfetched when you take a closer look.
