Eagles Depth Piece Who Started 6 Games Leaving for Rebuilding Squad

The Philadelphia Eagles have seen a bunch of changes along the roster after winning Super Bowl 59 over the Kansas City Chiefs. That list includes Oren Burks, Josh Sweat, Mekhi Becton, Milton Williams, Isaiah Rodgers, Darius Slay, and Chauncey Gardner-Johnson.

Another player has decided to skip town on Wednesday. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Jacksonville Jaguars are signing offensive tackle Fred Johnson to a one-year deal.

Fred Johnson Signs With the Jacksonville Jaguars

Johnson stepped in for the Eagles and started in six games when Jordan Mailata missed some time due to a hamstring injury. The Florida product came in as an undrafted free agent in 2019. He signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers first before making stops with the Cincinnati Bengals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Eagles.

Over 480 offensive snaps in 2024, Johnson had a 47.5 overall grade (121st among 141 graded tackles), a 37.3 pass-blocking grade (128th among 141 graded tackles), and a 55.1 run-blocking grade (104th among 141 graded tackles) per PFF. In those reps, Johnson gave up eight sacks and committed four penalties.

While his numbers weren't outstanding for the Birds, he's 27 years old, and the Jags believe he could be a nice depth option for them. Walker Little is their starting LT, but Johnson provides them with someone who could step in when needed.

The Eagles are seeing players leave left and right but that's what happens when you come off a Super Bowl. Teams around the league will poach players from your team and Johnson is the latest example of that for Philadelphia.

Thankfully for the Birds, they have one of the best offensive lines in the league, led by Jeff Stoutland. He has shown the ability to bring the best out of offensive linemen and he'll look to do that again in 2025.
