There were some roster overturn from the Philadelphia Eagles during the offseason, but even those players who are gone have not made it that the team has a problem.
CBS Sports writer Josh Edwards reviewed every NFC team and identified their most significant remaining need. Edwards said the Eagles need a cornerback, but it isn't a glaring need on the roster.
"Philadelphia has replacement-level players or better at every position, so "need" is a relative term. Quinyon Mitchell allowed the Eagles to move on from Darius Slay, but there is not a lot of proven commodities in that room. Kelee Ringo, Adoree' Jackson and Eli Ricks will have to lock down that other starting role.
Finding a long-term piece alongside A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith would be optimal, but tight end jumps to the top of the list if they do ultimately part with Dallas Goedert. The Eagles did lose free agents Milton Williams, Josh Sweat and Mekhi Becton, but had already been preparing for that eventuality."
Edwards nailed it with the fact that the Eagles already had replacements ready for all their departures. General manager Howie Roseman has known this was going to be the case for the past year and has refined his offseason plan to include replacements for everyone who is leaving.
Roseman planned to ensure that, over the last two to three years, the Eagles had built the team through the draft. It was why he was aggressive in trading up for guys like Jalen Carter, so they could step in for someone like Williams leaving.
The second part of the plan was also financially influenced. Philadelphia needs to save money for the young guys on rookie contracts who have performed well. There will be a point in the next two to three years when they will also need big paydays.
Things could get dicey next offseason with some of the positions Edwards mentioned like at tight end and wide receiver. Again, the Eagles have a plan that will be solved through the NFL Draft. Philadelphia is projected to select between 10 and 13 picks next year, which gives the franchise plenty of ammunition to strike multiple deals to move up for those replacements.
The scouting department has performed exceptionally well in Philadelphia, so the Eagles can afford to continue drawing from the NFL Draft to find top talent. Many fans often yell, "We can't keep letting Howie get away with this!!" with the amount of times he has found top talent through the draft.
Good luck with that. Roseman has shown no signs of slowing down in that department.
