The Washington Commanders revamped their wide receiver room this offseason by adding an elite playmaker in Deebo Samuel, fourth-round rookie Jaylin Lane and former Dallas Cowboy Michael Gallup.
However, one wide receiver who’s seemingly flying under the radar is second-year player Luke McCaffrey.
And we'd say don't sleep on this prospect.
The Commanders selected McCaffrey with the 100th overall pick in the third round of the 2024 NFL draft and he is a potential breakout candidate next season.
The former Rice Owl appeared in all 17 games, including four starts for the Commanders last season. At one point late last season, McCaffrey ranked fourth in the NFL in Pro Football Focus’ separation percentage metric.
"I don't think there's any secret to success, especially in this league and especially in such a competitive, results-driven game. I think hard work and dedication. There's not going to be anything that's a miracle that somebody finds. It's going to be put your nose to the grindstone, put your head down, and enjoy the process. That's the only way to success, and that's the only way I've been able to see guys succeed. It's cool to have a group of guys here that do that, and it's cool to have a training partner (older brother Christian McCaffrey) who does that,” McCaffrey said.
Luke has by all reports had a strong offseason and is looking forward to a potential increased role in 2025.
While Terry McLaurin, Zach Ertz, and Samuel are expected to command the lion’s share of targets from sophomore quarterback Jayden Daniels, McCaffrey has a real chance to emerge as another reliable weapon in offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury’s system.
