Dolphins Starter Dealing With a Concussion: Report

Another Miami Dolphins starter exited training camp practice with an injury Sunday. SI on Dolphins’ Alain Poupart reported Miami full back Alec Ingold left Sunday’s practice session after sustaining a head injury.

Ingold entered the concussion protocol after practice.

“Ingold went down on a running play when the Dolphins were doing a period with the offense backed up against their goal line,” wrote Poupart.

“After a running play was stopped, Ingold was on the ground lying face down.

“Tyreek Hill immediately signaled for trainers to come over and head coach Mike McDaniel eventually kneeled besides Ingold.

“After a minute or so, Ingold sat up and then walked inside the Baptist Health Training Complex accompanied by a trainer.”

Ingold has started 37 games for the Dolphins over the past three seasons. In 2024, he started 10 of 15 contests.

Over those 15 games, Ingold had 17 rushing yards and one touchdown. He also chipped in 11 catches for 96 yards.

In 15 games, Ingold played 337 offensive snaps, which was 33% of Miami’s snaps on offense during the 2024 season. He also lined up for 84 special teams snaps.

Alec Ingold Leaves Dolphins Practice With Concussion

Ingold doesn’t add a lot to the Dolphins offense from a statistical standpoint. But as most modern day full backs are, Ingold is a Swiss-Army knife of sorts, playing a lot of different roles for Miami.

In 2023, Ingold earned the AFC Pro Bowl nomination at full back. During that campaign, he had 13 catches and 119 receiving yards.

Before coming to Miami, Ingold played three seasons for the Las Vegas Raiders. From 2019-21, he started 11 of 41 games for the Raiders.

Ingold joined the Raiders as an undrafted free agent in May 2019.

The full back has more than a month to recover from his concussion. But if he has to miss any time, he will be a notable loss for the Miami offense.

Ingold will have to clear the NFL’s concussion protocol before returning to the field.

The Dolphins will face the Chicago Bears in their first preseason game on August 10 at 1 pm ET.

Dolphins’ Jaelan Phillips Exited Saturday’s Practice: Report

Ingold’s concussion came just a day after Jaelan Phillips suffered a bit of an injury scare.

Multiple Dolphins insiders from The Miami Herald reported Phillips left Saturday’s practice session with a leg ailment.

“Phillips stood on the sideline with his helmet in his hand for a while, trying to determine if he could jog without an issue,” wrote The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson. “He seemed to determine that he could not jog comfortably and then walked to the opposite side of the field to meet with a team trainer, taking a seat on a team cooler, before walking under his own power into the team facility.”

Jackson added that Phillips was having trouble jogging.

However, the edge rusher clarified on social media that he was alright.

“I just got leg whipped yall, chill out,” Phillips posted with a laughing emoji on X. “Just a bruise.”

Phillips appears to be fine. In the long run, Ingold likely will be too. But as Dolphins fans know through the experiences of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, concussions can linger and have to be taken very seriously.
