The Miami Dolphins have been weighing what to do at the quarterback position since starter Tua Tagovailoa went down with another concussion in their Week 2 matchup with the Buffalo Bills. It remains unknown how long Tagovailoa will be out so Miami has decided to bring in some help.
According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, Miami is signing veteran quarterback Snoop Huntley off the Baltimore Ravens practice squad. Huntley will likely be in a quarterback competition with Skylar Thompson moving forward.
Huntley rejoined the Ravens this season after being cut by the Cleveland Browns. The former Pro Bowl signal-caller will now get his chance to potentially shine in Miami while the team awaits more news on Tagovailoa.
Tagovailoa is set to meet with neurologists this coming week but reports have stated that he has no plans to retire. ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter gave the latest on his injury status on Sunday.
"There is currently no timeline that exists [for his return]," Schefter said. "Tua Tagovailoa will go in search of that this week when he begins meeting with neurologists to get more information about his condition and what is the best course of action for him to move forward. He's 26-years-old, when he went through this before, he had no desire to retire. My understanding is he still would like to continue playing and doesn't have any plans to retire. That is going into the meeting with the neurologists which will help give him more information, which will help him make an informed decision."
Miami had said that they weren't planning on adding any quarterbacks and were going forward with Thompson. But the addition of Huntley does bring some intrigue to this team for the remainder of the year, or however long Tagovailoa is sidelined.
Huntley provided Baltimore with a solid backup option for Lamar Jackson when he suffered some injuries in recent years. He made nine starts over the last four seasons with the Ravens, throwing for 1,957 yards with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. Huntley also rushed for 509 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.
Playing in a friendly offense like the Dolphins, Huntley could find success, especially with their loaded wide receiving core. Both Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle would give him two elite offensive weapons to throw the ball too, making life easier on him.
He will need to win the quarterback position but it seems that Miami has a plan in place without Tagovailoa. This signing could mean that the Dolphins anticipate Tagovailoa not returning this season.
