Dolphins Predicted To Cut QB After Disastrous Pre-Season Appearance

The Miami Dolphins‘ quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, does not have the best track record with injuries over the course of his career, having suffered three major concussions in same amount of seasons since 2022.Dolphins make a brutal QB cut in latest 53-man roster prediction

Unfortunately for the Dolphins, it seems like the team’s backup options are not quite playing up to the level the organization would have hoped. Second choice quarterback and former second overall pick, Zach Wilson, did not have a great debut in the pre-season on Sunday – and neither did third stringer, and rookie seventh round pick, Quinn Ewers.

And many outlets are now suggesting, as a result, that Ewers end up not making the team past final cuts in late August.

Quinn Ewers Did Not Impress In His First Pre-Season Game

Brian Miller of Phins Phanatic recapped the former Texas man’s pre-season performance – and it was not pretty.

“Ewers was not able to move the ball consistently and often looked rushed with his throws.” Miller wrote on Sunday, “He finished the game with a 27.8 completion percentage while taking two sacks, including one on the Dolphins’ final drive as time ticked away. He fumbled twice.”

Miller suggested that Ewers did not put himself in a good position to make the Dolphins’ roster – despite him being one of just 3 QBs on the training camp roster.

“Ewers didn’t make a strong case for a position on the final 53-man roster, and he needs a quick turnaround to change that.”

Does Ewers Still Have A Decent Shot to Make The Roster?

He should not be fully counted out by any means, although FanSided’s Wynston Wilcox suggests that his fate could be all but sealed after a very underwhelming first look.

Despite the headline and the gloomy first paragraph, Wilcox does admit that Ewers can still make the roster – provided that his performances improve dramatically.

“Sunday was not a good start for him, but it doesn’t completely end his hopes of making the Dolphins’ roster.” Wilcox pointed out, “The Dolphins are one of the best situations he could be in as a rookie quarterback. There’s an outside chance he gets playing time, while not having the pressure of being the guy right away….But he has to play better than he did in his preseason debut. His margin for error just shrunk after a bad outing. That should be all the motivation he needs to get back on track. ”

After the implementation of the ‘Brock Purdy Rule’ that allowed teams to dress an extra QB for gamedays, as long as he is on their 53-man roster, GMs have been more keen on keeping on a third quarterback.

Even though Ewers is currently the third of just three signal callers, that does not necessarily mean that his position is guaranteed, however. The organization could look to pick up another quarterback amidst the many that will inevitably be released at final cuts at the end of the month – or they may look to trade for an established, reliable player at the position.

Strong play in the following two pre-season would certainly put Ewers back in contention for the roster – but at this point, Miami will not be feeling great about their QB options behind Tua.
