The Pittsburgh Steelers announced six total roster moves on Tuesday, July 29, amid training camp.
“We have signed DT Domenique Davis, TE Kevin Foelsch and RB Lew Nichols, waived/injured WR Montana Lemonious-Craig and LB Jeremiah Moon, and terminated the contract of RB/KR Cordarrelle Patterson,” the Steelers’ social media team revealed on X.
Patterson’s release was expected after he took to social media on the matter the day before, on July 28. Realistically, though, that cut was a long time coming as the veteran wasn’t even participating in practices at training camp.
The other two moves were caused by injuries, as the Steelers decided to move on from a 2024 13-game contributor on defense and special teams, in Moon, and an undrafted rookie in Lemonious-Craig.
Both were sidelined during the most recent training camp practice. Moon had a “calf” injury, according to Steelers Now beat reporter Alan Saunders, and Lemonious-Craig’s issue was described as a “lower-body soft tissue injury.”
In place of the trio of cuts, Pittsburgh is re-signing Davis, who was with the practice squad last winter, and bringing in a new tight end and running back. Keep in mind, the Steelers also lost rookie tight end DJ Thomas-Jones to injury for the foreseeable future, so Foelsch should help fill the depth void at the position for now.
More on Steelers Signings: Domenique Davis, Kevin Foelsch & Lew Nichols
As mentioned above, the Steelers brought in three new training camp signings on July 29.
Davis is the veteran of the group, at age 29. He’s a 6-foot-2 run-stuffer defensive tackle who has spent the majority of his NFL career with the division rival Cincinnati Bengals.
Per Pro Football Reference, Davis has only appeared in 2 regular season outings since entering the league in 2022. He has been credited with 3 total tackles.
Davis originally worked his way up the ladder after attending a Division II football program. He first made a name for himself in the USFL with the Houston Gamblers in the spring of 2022, racking up 3.5 sacks and 57 total tackles.
Next up is the soon-to-be 24-year-old running back, Nichols, who is a “former NCAA-leading rusher,” according to the aforementioned Saunders and Steelers Now.
Nichols has yet to appear in a regular season game after being drafted by the Green Bay Packers in round seven of the 2023 draft. He spent the 2024 preseason with the Philadelphia Eagles, rushing the ball 15 times for 30 yards and 1 touchdown.
Nichols also has experience returning kickoffs, which is likely the reason for his addition following the Patterson cut.
Finally, Foelsch is a 6-foot-4 former Division II tight end who spent his rookie training camp and preseason with the Eagles. He recorded 3 catches for 17 yards last summer and earned a very brief look with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2025.
Like Nichols, Foelsch has yet to appear in a regular season NFL game at age 24.
Lightning Storm Derails First Day of Pads at Steelers Training Camp
As for Tuesday’s practice and the eager anticipation that comes with the first day of pads at training camp, a disappointed Mike Tomlin spoke for everyone after he had to move the work day indoors due to thunderstorms and rejigger his plans.
“Didn’t get what we were looking for today, but such is life and such is football,” Tomlin told the media, via ESPN’s Brooke Pryor.
Pryor also relayed that “Tomlin says he’s not ready to make changes to the practice schedule after weather interference in the first couple of days. He says that prior to today, the missed time was part of the acclimation period. Today was the first day of real camp practice missed.”
