Detroit Lions’ 1 Biggest Weakness is a No-Brainer

The Detroit Lions came oh-so close to making it to the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history two years in a row, and falling short just stings. But, it only keeps the current roster of players even more motivated for the future.

There’s some excitement but also hesitation leading into the new season for the Detroit Lions. After two years of historically great seasons, but both of those seasons ending in heartbreak, it might seem a bit difficult to muster up that same amount of hope again. While many of the Lions’ players are coming back for another season, the team lost both of their coordinators, so that will make next season’s staff look much different.

Thankfully, the Lions are considered one of the big contenders for the Super Bowl. But, no team is perfect, and the Lions have one weakness that is being pointed out, which is not surprising at all. So, what’s the one thing the Lions have to overcome to finally get to the big game?

Detroit Lions Have 1 ‘Flaw,’ Analyst Says

In a June 12 feature for Bleacher Report, Moe Moton rattles off one “roster flaw” that could give trouble to a handful of teams that are favorites to make it to the Super Bowl. It’s great to see the Lions included, even if it does mean pointing out a flaw.

He notes that usually, it’s easy to see the weaknesses in the teams that aren’t very good, but it’s more difficult to see those weaknesses in stronger teams. So, utilizing information from DraftKings, he determined which teams have the best odds to win Super Bowl LX and named which issue could hold them back.

“Every year, fans’ hopes turn into despair when their team can’t overcome its flaws,” Moton states. “Sometimes, clubs are able to correct those issues early with personnel changes, roster moves and tweaks to game plans. Other times, a team’s downfall seems inevitable.”

For the Lions, Moton says that the main struggle will be adjusting to having two new coordinators in John Morton as offensive coordinator and Kelvin Sheppard as defensive coordinator. That’s so expected, right?

“The Detroit Lions should refer to the Philadelphia Eagles’ 2023 season as a cautionary tale about what could happen when a team replaces its offensive and defensive coordinators,” Moton says before launching into a story about the Eagles struggling that season.

“While Detroit may try to carry over some principles from the previous coordinators,” he adds, “the turnover within the coaching ranks could result in regression for one or both sides of the ball.”

Even the Reigning Super Bowl Champs Have a Weakness

Of course, the Philadelphia Eagles are the reigning Super Bowl champions after defeating the Kansas City Chiefs last season, but they’re still included on this roster of weaknesses. Moton states that they could struggle under new offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo.

“This offseason, the Eagles lost Kellen Moore, who accepted the offer for the New Orleans Saints head coaching position, and promoted Kevin Patullo to fill the offensive coordinator role,” he explains in the feature.

He adds that, “The Eagles defense should remain stout with Vic Fangio still in place, but one has to wonder if Patullo can optimize the talent on the offensive side of the ball.”
