Preparations for the 2025 season begin in just four days for the Denver Broncos, as they are set to report to training camp on Wednesday, July 16.
This is one of the most highly anticipated years for the Broncos in recent memory. They have bolstered their defense to the point where many believe it could be the best in the NFL, and have also added some new weapons offensively.
Unfortunately, Denver still has two pieces of important business that need taken care of. As pointed out by Mile High Sports' Cody Roark on X, first-round pick cornerback Jahdae Barron and second-round pick running back RJ Harvey are still unsigned.
Barron and Harvey will not participate in practices until they are signed. Barron is one of just two first-round picks in the NFL who remained unsigned, along with Bengals defensive end Shemar Stewart. Stewart's situation with Cincinnati has become messy, but all has been quiet with Barron and the Broncos. It would be very surprising if they don't reach a deal very soon.
Harvey's situation is much more complex. Only two of 32 second-round picks have signed their rookie contracts — Cleveland Browns linebacker Carson Schwesinger and Houston Texans wide receiver Jayden Higgins. Both have signed fully guaranteed deals, which is not the norm for second-rounders.
Agents who represent the other 2025 second-round picks are working towards also getting them fully guaranteed deals, but teams aren't budging. Harvey is expected to be the lead back for Denver as a rookie, but missing valuable time during training camp could set him back.
The Broncos will lean on new free agent addition JK Dobbins, as well as Audric Estime and Jaleel McLaughlin to carry the load at RB until Harvey joins them. Time will tell if the agents or teams will cave in first on this issue with second-round picks, but we may be in the for the long haul until it is resolved.
