Deion Sanders issued a quick and powerful reaction just minutes after Shedeur Sanders threw his first touchdown pass with the Cleveland Browns on Friday.
Sanders drew the start for the preseason opener. After an up-and-down first quarter, Sanders and the Browns took advantage of a muffed punt to get on the board and tie the game at 7-7. Sanders rolled out to his left and found Kaden Davis with a beautiful ball in the back corner of the end zone.
“Yes Lawd! Yes!” Deion Sanders wrote on X after the touchdown, tagging his son.
Shedeur threw his second touchdown pass late in the second quarter, finding Davis again on a 12-yard score.
“Oh yeah what now!” Deion Sanders said after the second touchdown. “God is so Good!”
Deion Sanders wasn’t the only one taking notice of Shedeur’s performance.
“I’ve seen enough. Shedeur Sanders is a star,” one fan said.
Another added, “Look, I know he’s playing against backups, but there’s something to be said about Shedeur Sanders’ ability to remain poised and process a defense. He looks like a veteran out there right now, which is pretty impressive for someone making his professional debut.”
Sanders finished the game with 138 yards and two touchdowns. He completed 14 of 23 of his passes. The Browns won 30-10.
Deion Sanders was asked earlier in the day about Shedeur’s debut. As usual, Coach Prime was very confident in his son.
“I just can’t wait to see him get down tonight,” Deion Sanders said. “But it’s going to be a little weird, a little strange. He’s gonna be a problem after tonight, I promise you that.”
Confidence is one thing, but Deion said he felt Shedeur was ready for the moment after speaking with him multiple times.
“We’ve already spoken like three times today. We just got off the phone, joking and clowning like crazy. It’s going to be strange for both of us,” Deion Sanders said. “Him taking that walk and knowing I’m not there. That’s different for him. But he’s so prepared right now. A lot of people are approaching it like a preseason game. He’s approaching it like a game. And that’s how he’s approached everything — to prepare. He’s thankful and appreciative of the opportunity. He doesn’t get caught up in all the rhetoric in the media.”
Sanders also drew praise from the Browns’ sideline. Cleveland quarterback Joe Flacco had a sideline interview with Aditi Kinkhabwala in the second quarter and applauded Sanders.
“I think he’s doing a good job tonight. I’m happy he’s getting the ball out of his hands early in the down. He’s also been able to show that he can move around a little bit and do his thing,” Flacco said on the broadcast. “One of the things I’ll give him a lot of credit for — the moment is not too big. He’s able to slow things down and go at his pace, operating the way he wants to.”
Flacco is currently listed as the No. 1 quarterback on the depth chart in Cleveland. Flacco, Dillon Gabriel and Kenny Pickett did not suit up for Friday’s game.
Cleveland’s next preseason game is against the Philadelphia Eagles on August 16.
