Deebo Samuel's trade to the Washington Commanders is the definition of a low-risk, high-reward pickup from general manager Adam Peters. The wide receiver cost just a fifth-round pick to see how much he's got left in the tank, and the club can get off the move in 2026 after deciding not to extend the wide receiver immediately.
Hopes are high that Samuel can become a productive running mate for Terry McLaurin. However, there has been one primary focus behind criticism, and in this case, ridicule around the prolific playmaker.
Something that was reflected in the comments made by two former Philadelphia Eagles players regarding Samuel's perceived lack of conditioning.
Former Eagles stars take cheap shots at Commanders wideout Deebo Samuel
Brandon Graham was the first to take a not-so-subtle swipe at Samuel, proclaiming the Eagles have absolutely nothing to worry about where the former second-round pick is concerned. He said the division would once again come down to Washington and Philadelphia, but the wideout (apparently) needed to get in shape before making a lasting contribution.
It's going to be between us two. I wouldn't worry about him. He gotta be in shape first—he don't look like he in shape right now.Brandon Graham via SI
Terrell Owens was next. The Pro Football Hall of Famer was a little more jovial but no less personal, proclaiming that Samuel was a few chicken nuggets away from tipping the scales.
If it wasn't personal for Samuel in 2025, it is now.
This is a tired, lazy take. The reports have been glowing around the player during Washington's offseason program. Dan Quinn reflected on how surprised he was by the South Carolina product's speed. He's been working hard away from the gridiron and has all the incentive needed to bounce back from a down year by his typical Pro Bowl-caliber standards last time around.
This is extra motivation for Samuel. He's heard all the criticism coming his way, but the Commanders' faith is unwavering. That's all fans should be concerned about.
They believe Samuel still has a lot left to give. They believe Samuel can be an integral part of Kliff Kingsbury's offensive strategy. They believe he can make things easier for quarterback sensation Jayden Daniels. No amount of cheap shots from media members, current players, or former stars will alter that perception.
And don't be surprised if Samuel saves a little bit extra for the Eagles thanks to the ill-advised comments made by Graham and Owens. They should know better than to poke the bear.
