The Los Angeles Rams made their first two selection on day two of the draft, selecting tight end Terrance Ferguson and edge rusher Josaiah Stewart. It was a strong start with two solid players. However, the success of day three is what separates good drafts from great drafts. The Rams still have plenty of needs to address. Let’s get into our day three mock draft.
If the Rams are going to take an offensive tackle, they may have to do so at 127. If there is a position that they wait on, it would likely be linebacker. At the same time, there is some great value at the linebacker position in this spot and the Rams may simply opt for a developmental tackle later in the draft.
Smael Mondon Jr. continues to be one of my favorite fits for the Rams at linebacker. He’s solid against the run, is a rangy player, and has the athleticism to run in coverage. Mondon is also one of the best leaders in this draft which the Rams need in the back seven. Again, it could be offensive tackle here, but linebacker remains a big need.
In the case that Nelson does last to pick 190, the Rams would almost have to sprint to the table with his draft card. Nelson is a perfect fit in the Rams offense and ecosystem and it goes further than simply coming from Wisconsin. At the Combine, Nelson did mention that he models his game after Andrew Whitworth and spent a spring practice training with Rob Havenstein.
From a fit standpoint, Nelson has 50 career starts with 37 of them coming at left tackle. However, he does have 13 starts at left guard. Nelson is a fundamental player with efficient footwork and played in a zone-based run scheme with gap principles.
Ricky White feels like a Rams wide receiver that they take late in the draft and he finds a role in the offense by year two or three as the fourth player in the room. White is a good route-runner and a competitive blocker. He also brings good special teams ability which is what the Rams will be looking for in this portion of the draft.
At this point, the Rams have told everybody what they think of the cornerback position. They have actively passed on players like Trey Amos and Will Johnson. Whether it is right or wrong, they have confidence in Ahkello Witherspoon and Darious Williams. It’s possible that they have some confidence that they will be able to trade for Jalen Ramsey. McWilliams is a good fit and provides good depth.
Hunter is a player that has been featured consistently on day three of my mock drafts. He simply feels like a Rams running back. While he may not have the home-run ability, Hunter does bring 4.4 speed and approximately 33 percent of his carries between the tackles went for 10 or more yards. The Auburn running back will be a good option behind Kyren Williams and Blake Corum.
Death, taxes, and the Rams taking a safety on day three of the draft and then turning them into a starter. The Rams did not draft a safety on day three last year and they will likely look to add on on Saturday. Trader was a special teams ace at Maryland and despite his size, can be a physical presence in the middle of a secondary.
