Brandon Beane has made it clear that he will do whatever he thinks is necessary to make the Bills a better team. There's also no denying that Davante Adams, one of the best wide receivers of the last decade, still has plenty of talent.
With reports that the Jets are fielding calls on Adams half a season after trading for him, there's one clear way that the Bills should handle the situation — stay very far away.
Why should Buffalo stay away? It all comes down to money. Putting aside the fact that a trade seems nearly impossible considering they're in the same division, Adams counts a whopping $38.3 million against the cap in 2025, and again in 2026. Already at 32 years old, it's hard to imagine any acquiring team wanting to pen him to much of a long-term deal.
As we've seen in the past, Adams really has his mind set on playing with his longtime quarterback Aaron Rodgers. They essentially arranged the Jets situation to happen, and with the Jets not interested in bringing Rodgers back, Adams could find himself on the open market via release if the Jets can't find a trade partner willing to take on the hefty salary.
None of this should appeal to the Bills. If Adams hits free agency, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Beane has checked on his situation, which he should, but it seems inevitably that wherever Rodgers signs, Adams will want to sign as well.
There are plenty of ways for Beane to improve the Buffalo Bills wide receiver room this offseason that won't cost nearly $40 million per year, especially with Buffalo slated to have a tight salary cap to work with. It's best that the Bills just sit this one out.
