It took a lot of convincing for Daniel Jones to get the contract he wanted with the New York Giants back in 2023.
It always felt that the New York Giants were never fully committed to former starting quarterback Daniel Jones, even after their playoff win in 2023.
The former sixth-overall pick had to fight tooth and nail to get the eventual four-year, $160 million deal he received. The Giants were right to be cautious, as Jones was released just a year and a half into his extension with the organization last season.
But just because Jones is no longer a member of Big Blue doesn't mean his camp can't take a victory lap of sorts.
Perhaps that is why A.J. Stevens of Athletes First explained how far he went to secure Jones' contract on the "NFL Spotlight with Ari Meirov" podcast last week. That included a ''42-page manifesto" for New York to go through.
"I think the Giants called it that ... gave a history of the quarterback position since 2010-ish and eventually a proposal, "Stevens said. "So you had to read through 41 pages to actually see our first proposal to the Giants ... It was absurd at the time... Looking back, it's still absurd.
"It inevitably got us to the point where we did a buzzer-beater deal where there were seconds left before the deadline."
Perhaps needing a 42-page memo about why a player should be valued higher than expected was the first sign that the Giants should have moved on from Jones after the 2022-23 season.
However, coming off a playoff win, that would have always been hard to sell.
New York has been stuck between a rock and a hard place with Jones ever since. …. And on the field? There are, as of now, no winners.
