Los Angeles Lakers guard D’Angelo Russell is clearing the air after a cryptic social media post led to speculation about friction within the team.
Earlier this week, Russell shared a short message on X (formerly Twitter) that read simply, “Some people talk more than they work.” While he didn’t mention any names, fans and media outlets quickly began theorizing that it was aimed at a teammate. The speculation caught fire, with basketball podcasts and sports shows debating whether there was tension in the Lakers’ locker room.
Russell addressed the rumors following a team workout on Thursday, brushing off the idea of any rift. “It wasn’t about anyone in here,” he told reporters. “It’s crazy how people take one line and turn it into drama. I’ve got nothing but respect for my teammates. We’re locked in.”
The veteran guard explained that the post was inspired by something outside of basketball, and that he’s used to having his words overanalyzed. “That’s the world we live in — social media turns everything into a story. But I’m focused on the season ahead.”
Several Lakers teammates backed him up, with one saying, “We all know D-Lo. He’s not out here throwing shots at us. We’re good.”
Russell, who re-signed with the Lakers this offseason, is expected to play a critical role in the team’s playoff push. For him, the focus remains on building chemistry and staying healthy for the long grind ahead.
“In this league, there’s always noise,” he said. “You just have to know what’s real and what’s not. For us, it’s about winning — everything else is just background.”
With training camp looming, it seems the Lakers are determined to put the chatter behind them and keep their eyes on the bigger goal.
