The Washington Commanders haven't been afraid to add big names throughout another eventful offseason for the franchise. One NFL analyst believes that head coach Dan Quinn could benefit from another with a top-level performer remaining on the market.
Adam Peters has his sights firmly set on the 2025 NFL Draft. The Commanders only have five picks available right now, although that could change depending on whether the general manager can engineer a trade-down at some stage. Not every need is going to be filled, so dipping into the remaining veteran pool is almost guaranteed before the new campaign arrives.
One of the biggest remaining objectives is finding more dynamism in the edge-rushing room. The Commanders don't have enough right now to counteract some of the NFL's elite offensive lines. Identifying a gifted prospect via the draft is almost assured. That shouldn't prevent Peters from finding another short-term solution for immediate assistance.
Commanders urged to enter Za'Darius Smith race before the 2025 campaign
Mark Stolte from Pro Football Network believes the Commanders should be in the mix for Za'Darius Smith. The three-time Pro Bowler is still looking for alternative employment after his brief stint with the Detroit Lions ended. He's not getting any younger, but the production remains high and his leadership is unquestioned in the locker room.
"The Washington Commanders should be one of many teams standing in line to sign Za’Darius Smith. With a legitimate quarterback in Jayden Daniels, the Commanders need to do everything in their power to address the needs of the defense. While the defensive line was actually quite decent last year, posting a pressure rate that ranked 12th in the league and a sack rate in the top 10, you can never have enough. Smith would bring the extra oomph needed for the Commanders to really take over as a top-half of the league defense and would make them an even tougher out in next season’s playoffs."

It's surprising to see Smith still sitting on the market. The former fourth-round selection is biding his time, waiting for the right fit rather than accepting the first offer that comes along. This would be on a contender with a legitimate chance to secure the Super Bowl. The Commanders are exactly that following their memorable run to the NFC Championship game in 2024.
With 18 sacks over the last two seasons, there are far worse avenues the Commanders could go down. This also fits into Peters' ethos of acquiring proven veterans with accomplished production. It doesn't matter if they're a little bit older. Producing the goods is all that matters with Washington's window for a Super Bowl officially open.
This won't happen until after the draft. Peters will scour the college ranks with his five (or more) picks. There's also the undrafted free agent pool, which represents another chance to unearth rough diamonds who could impact the roster in some capacity.
If the Commanders aren't satisfied with their returns, that's when someone with Smith's credentials comes into play. And he'd no doubt relish the chance to join Washington's exciting project if given the chance.
