When new Detroit Lions cornerback D.J. Reed hit the free agent market this offseason he had plenty of options for where he wanted to play next.
He was seen as the top cornerback available in this year's free agent class and one of the best free agents regardless of position.
Reed ended up taking a deal worth $16 million per year, which was only the fifth-largest contract signed at the position this offseason, to join the Lions.
Now he has revealed exactly what it was that attracted him to the Lions.
During a March 28 appearance on "The Jim Rome Show", Reed said that his main reason for joining the Lions was that he wanted a chance to win a Super Bowl.
I wanted a chance to win a Lombardi, bro. That’s something that I want to do. I want to win a Lombardi with my teammates, with my coaches, with my organization. I wanted to go somewhere and play good football, meaningful football. That was the main thing for me.
Actually getting to compete for a chance at a Super Bowl will be a pretty big change of pace for Reed after spending the last three years with the Jets.
Despite three strong seasons from Reed, the Jets didn't finish with a winning record in any of his years with the team.
Meanwhile, the Lions made it to the NFC Championship Game in 2023 and then won 15 games last season.
Now they've added Reed to their defense after he allowed an average of just 6.2 yards per target and a 60.1% completion percentage during his run with the Jets.
They'll be hoping he's one of the final pieces they've been missing to end the season lifting the Lombardi Trophy.
