During the Southern Charm Season 10 premiere (December 5), Craig Conover opened up about the life-changing decision to reduce his drinking. But what exactly motivated the move? Well, it was his relationship with Summer House’s Paige DeSorbo.

“I had made a decision months before the season started to become more of a husband and father material than just the fun boyfriend,” he revealed in a recent People magazine interview. “I could see it in Paige’s eyes that she saw the person I could be.”

The Sewing Down South boss clarified he’ll have “a drink or two” once every couple of months, which was “drastically better than drinking every night or every other night.”

“I’m having fun finding that middle ground,” he said, adding he now has more time to focus on his business and “wholesome activities.” “There is a part of me that I haven’t necessarily killed off, but I’ve put away. And I think people who really liked that side of me will have to mourn, which I never considered before.”

Craig says he and Paige are "playing the long game"

Craig said his decision to cut back on drinking will be further addressed in Southern Charm Season 10, as some of his castmates questioned why he was “giv[ing] up all of [their] good times.” And although not everyone was thrilled with his lifestyle change, Craig suggested it had only strengthened his relationship with Paige.

“We’re playing the long game. It would be easy to go for instant gratification, but the foundation that we’re building is so that we die together one day, not just make it fun,” he told the outlet before touching on the “marriage” question. “We know we’re going to get married one day, and when it happens, it’ll be a lot of fun, but whenever that is, who knows?”

Craig thinks *this* is when he and Paige will "probably" start a family

Craig said he understands why the public is so invested in his relationship, as it’s been documented on the small screen for the past several years; however, Craig reiterated that he and Paige were moving at their own pace and refused to succumb to outside pressure.

“There’s no reason to put pressure on it. I think people will have a lot more of our lives to watch because we’re taking our time than if we were to rush it,” he said about the next steps of his relationship. “I’m committed to doing what it takes to make it work. We really don’t know what that looks like. We’ve got a couple years probably until we start having kids, and then we’ll have to figure it out. But I’ve really taken this normal role now of being a happy wife, happy life.”
