Cowboys-Seahawks trade pitch sends $21 million Pro Bowl guard to Seattle

The Seattle Seahawks addressed their pressing need for a guard in the 2025 NFL Draft, as the team used the No.18 overall pick on North Dakota State's Grey Zabel.

Though Zabel will step in as an immediate starter on the interior of Seattle's offensive line, the Seahawks still need another starting-caliber guard. General manager John Schneider could look towards free agency to fill the hole, but Last Word on Sports' David Latham believes Seattle should try to pull off a blockbuster trade for Dallas Cowboys guard Tyler Smith.

Which is most intriguing non-primetime game in 2025? 'GMFB'

"While first-round pick Grey Zabel will improve the trenches, the other guard position is a glaring weakness. If his agent cannot land an extension with the Dallas Cowboys, the Seahawks should do everything they can to land Tyler Smith," Latham wrote.

Smith has been one of the best interior offensive linemen in football since entering the league in 2022. The 24-year-old has been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of the last two seasons and has also allowed just three sacks in that span.

With Smith seeking an extension from the Cowboys and Dallas already having an expensive roster, the team could look to trade the young guard and find a cheaper replacement.

If Dallas decides to trade Smith, Seattle should pursue him. The Tulsa product would be a monumental addition to the Seahawks' offensive line and provide high-level play at guard. Additionally, Seattle has the future cap space to sign Smith to an extension and keep him as a starter on the offense for years to come.

Selecting Zabel to fill one of the starting spots was an excellent move by Schneider, but acquiring Smith in a trade with the Cowboys to lock down the other guard position would be an even better move. However, it's hard to see a scenario where the future All-Pro offensive lineman isn't with Dallas to begin the 2025 campaign.
