Cowboys Predicted to Cut Ties With Former Touted Quarterback in Roster Shakeup

The Dallas Cowboys gave Joe Milton an opportunity to impress during the team’s preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams, but the signal-caller left a lot to be desired. Amid the Cowboys backup quarterback battle, Milton played the majority of the game over Will Grier.

Cowboys Rumors: Dallas Predicted to Cut Former Touted QB

Yet, the Cowboys offense scored just three points in the first three quarters. Milton struggled with consistency and showed an inability to lead scoring drives in his Cowboys debut.

In the end, it may not matter, as all signs point to Dallas naming Milton as the team’s backup quarterback behind Dak Prescott. This spells bad news for Will Grier who rushed for a touchdown versus the Rams despite limited snaps.

After a standout college football career at West Virginia, Grier was once mentioned as a potential first-round pick. Ultimately, the Carolina Panthers selected Grier in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft.

Here’s what you need to know about the Cowboys quarterback battle.

Cowboys Rumors: Dallas Predicted to Cut Ties With QB Will Grier

The Dallas Morning News’ Joseph Hoyt projects the Cowboys will keep just two quarterbacks. This makes Grier a strong cut candidate with Dallas retaining Prescott and Milton in the insider’s latest roster predictions.

“Nothing has changed in this projection here, but the door has been opened to the Cowboys possibly keeping three quarterbacks,” Hoyt wrote in an August 10, 2025, story titled, “Cowboys 53-man roster projection 2.0: Could Dallas make a surprising move at WR?”. “It seemed like Dallas was willing to give Milton the entire game against the Rams before he left in the fourth quarter with an elbow injury. Will Grier came in and played well, just as he did in the joint practice with the Rams when Milton left with a hand injury.

“So far, the Cowboys have seemingly only given Grier snaps when Milton is unavailable. If the Cowboys can trust Milton, then they might go with two quarterbacks — especially with needs elsewhere. If they can’t, then they may be forced to keep three quarterbacks.”

Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones on QB Joe Milton: ‘I Really Have to Pinch Myself That We Got Him’

Even if the Cowboys release Grier, the team could still re-sign the veteran to the team’s practice squad if another team does not claim the quarterback. The challenge for Grier is that it may not matter how good the quarterback plays in the preseason.

Milton appears to be the Cowboys’ latest experiment as a developmental quarterback behind Prescott, similar to what Dallas did with Trey Lance. The Cowboys gave up a fifth rounder to land Milton via a trade with the New England Patriots this offseason. Owner Jerry Jones sure sounds like someone eager to see Milton awarded the QB2 role.

“I really have to pinch myself that we got him after the last game that he had up there, starting there for New England,” Jones explained to 105.3 The Fan’s Kristi Scales during an August 9, interview, per Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio. “I’m just excited that we had a chance to get him. And he hasn’t disappointed. He’s actually — we’re just more and more encouraged by what we’re seeing.”

Cowboys HC Brian Schottenheimer on QB Joe Milton: ‘I’m Still Learning Him’

Milton completed 17-of-29 passes for 143 yards, one touchdown and one interception during the Cowboys’ loss to the Rams. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer does not sound concerned about Milton’s shaky debut.

“But what a great learning experience for Joe,” Schottenheimer told reporters on August 9. “I mean, the guy hasn’t played a ton of football in real situations like this where he’s getting hit.

“And I’m not sure I loved him running the guy over on the sidelines, but I think that kind of woke him up a little bit, got him going. And I’m still learning him as well in terms of his play style.”
